Hever Castle, Kent

Majestic magic

Spanning more than 700 years, the history of Hever Castle is rich and varied. The original medieval defensive castle, with its gatehouse and walled bailey, was built in 1270. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was the home of one of the most powerful families in the country, the Boleyns, who added the Tudor dwelling within the walls.

The Castle was to become the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII’s second wife, who became Queen of England for just 1,000 days. It was Henry’s love for Anne and her insistence that she became his wife rather than his mistress that led to the King renouncing Catholicism and creating the Church of England

The Experience

As we arrive, the grounds greet us with classic winter frost and Christmas trees are lined ahead of the grotto entrance. The elf team are interactive and engaging with children as they steer down the path to Father Christmas.

Each child is presented with an age appropriate gift. Our 3-year-old child was gifted with a plush soft toy. Father Christmas was amiable and you are given sufficient time before you are able to meander the rest of the grotto.

The Christmas trail is themed with Alice and Wonderland, which adds sparkle to the trip. At the end of it, you can hop onto the merry-go-round or sip some mulled wine at the pop-up wooden huts, at the castle to seal the festive spirit.

We concluded our trip by feasting on a traditional Christmas lunch at the restaurant. Children are catered for free and the quality is very good!

Verdict – Very good

On the whole the day is jam-packed with festive fun. It will leave limited space for boredom. A useful map and guide could be provided at the entrance for first time visitors and general directions as the activities are dotted randomly.
The grotto is very special and the relaxed atmosphere makes it a perfect choice for those who like to avoid the Christmas chaos. We would very much like to revisit in the future.
