A Christmas Favourite
Synopsis
Forty years ago, Raymond Briggs’ beautifully illustrated book – The Snowman transported children into the wintery wonderland of a boy and his snowy companion.
Now, in its record-breaking 21st year at The Peacock, Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s twinkling production of The Snowman returns, as a magical mix of beautiful dancing and live music lift the boy and his friend from page to stage.
The enchanting show tells the story of a young boy’s adventures when his snowman comes miraculously to life on Christmas Eve. Featuring a dazzling array of colourful characters including dancing penguins, a beautiful snow princess, her wicked beau Jack Frost and of course, Father Christmas himself, The Snowman is a Christmas treat for all the family and a perfect introduction to dance for the very young.
The Experience
There are several treats with this year’s performance and we applaud the creative team for its innovation.
The music is commendable and it resonated around the room. Howard Blake’s classic song ‘We’re Walking In The Air’ unquestionably fetches a lump to my throat.
The first half of the show greets cheery carol singers and formation of Snowman. The snowball sequence is marvellous and the anticipation is clearly sensed by the younger audience.
The enjoyment continues where life-size fruit comes toppling out of the kitchen fridge and whirls around. A sweet dance sequence features a life-size soldier, jewellery-box ballerina and teddy bear.
The second half salutes annual Snowman party, which is one of the principal parts. As the show grips to demonstrate melting reality of Snowman it is quickly revived by a magical snowfall directly into the audienceand delights the crowds.
